“Most of the writers here write in English,” said [Orhan] Pamuk. “Maybe that’s because the official language here is English. But for those working in other languages, their work is rarely translated and never read. So, much of human experience is marginalised.”
Grace Gregorio and I are spearheading this project so our champion team can train on new mats. Each mat (1mx1m) costs P900+ and the team needs 300 pcs. We are soliciting pledges for the MAT Project. If you want to show your appreciation to the UP Pep Squad, you can certainly express it by making…
Normally I wouldn’t watch the UAAP Cheerdance, but I had to see to believe that DLSU Animo Squad won 1st runner-up. Their routine was nice and clean, though I didn’t get their costume—forestry or gladiator? lol. One of their cheerleaders, Aiana Lontok, dislocated her shoulder early in the performance but kept on until the end of their routine. And it didn’t show at all in their performance that they have an injured member. That’s amazing. The win must be worth it. :)
UP Pep Squad won the championship again, and without a doubt they deserved it. The Madonna-theme was really cool. Did they dye their hair blonde or are those wigs? They probably did; can’t have flying wigs while tumbling. lol.
I guess the big surprise apart from DLSU winning is the UST Salinggawi’s absence in the top three. I thought their routine was nice, with the UST 400 bit and the main building. Maybe they should’ve just used their Quadricentennial mascot. dyoks. hehe
Congrats to DLSU Animo Squad, UP Pep Squad and the rest of the participating schools! And the real winner? Samsung! Became a top trending topic worldwide on Twitter after ABS-CBN Sports tweeted that anyone who tweets with the hashtag #samsungcheerdance has a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy phone. Wonder who won? :p
I went to the Manila International Book Fair today, for free, as one of the perks of working in a publishing house. haha. Of course, it’s still work-related but I got to buy some books on my own. In general, the book fair is still the same as in last year. I don’t know if it’s because I’m on a tight budget, but I think there are fewer selections to choose from in this year’s book fair. These are the books I bought:
From UP Press:
- Resil Mojares’ Origins and Rise of the Filipino Novel
- Patricia May B. Jurilla’s Bibliography of Filipino Novels 1901-2000
Both are non-fiction. I actually borrowed Origins from the UP Main Library, which is in a sorry state. I bought them to use as reference for my paper(s) - for this sem and beyond! :))
From Anvil:
- Gilda Cordero-Fernando’s Story Collection
I’ve been trying to find a decent copy of this book for the longest time! I want to own a copy because one of my favorite short stories, A Wilderness of Sweets, is in this book. I actually didn’t see this in the shelf; it was in a basket and that usually indicates it’s reserved. I asked one of the staff if they have another copy of it and he said that was the last copy. Then he asked me where I got it so I pointed to the basket. He assured me that the book wasn’t reserved and probably fell from the shelf. Now I don’t know if that’s really true but I just walked to the cashier as fast as I could and paid for it! haha
I don’t know if I’ll go back to the book fair this weekend. Three books only but still satisfied. :)
(The MIBF runs until September 18 at SMX, Mall of Asia.)
‘I sometimes wish I was gay,’ says Mark, my taxi driver, risking a quick glance as he navigates one of Manila’s extraordinary traffic tangles. ‘Gays are very hard workers. They do well in business, in school. They are more successful. Often, they are the breadwinners for an entire family.’…
Interesting article. Reminds me of what TQ told us one time; he knew of a community where parents make their young boys act gay because they believe if their son will be gay, he will be more productive, rather than be a tambay. (Not all attempts were successful, though.)

Ok, this is not helping me finish my paper! hahaha
